Adversarial system
Definition
The system of law that relies on the skill of each advocate representing his or her party’s positions and involves an impartial person, usually the judge, trying to determine the truth of the case. In media terms, a system of checks and balances in which media serve as a check on the establishment. Source: FreeDictionary
Loyalty
Definition
A philosophical and pragmatic issue centered around questions of allegiance, commitment, obligation, devotion, attachment, and social contracts.
Parasocial interaction
Definition
A theory that discusses the psychological relationships between a person in an audience with a media performer. These one-sided relationships occur when audiences believe they are “friends” with someone they encounter in media.
Particularistic obligations
Definition
Exclusive dedication to or interest in one’s own group, party, or nation; conditional and transitory commitments.
Sentimental loyalty
Definition
Shown when individuals bond with other individuals or groups simply because they like one another; gratitude is reciprocal.
Unsentimental loyalty
Definition
Loyalty that is conditional because it is done more out of obligation than enduring feelings; often found in “professional” relationships.
